Seniors finally have their graduation

For many seniors, graduation is a time to reflect on your four years of high school and celebrate their futures. The class of 2020’s commencement was a little different. Graduation this year was pushed back two months from its original date, because of the COVID-19 outbreak. Although the seniors did not get to participate in many last quarter activities such as prom, baccalaureate mass, and the last day of school; they got to leave Chatard with a senior year they will never forget.

This year was the first ever graduation celebrated outside on the Bishop Chatard football field as mentioned by Joe Hanson. New graduate Alex Geise said, “It was really cool to have graduation outside instead of in a hot gym.’’ As well as having to stay six feet apart, masks were also required to watch or participate in graduation.

Even though graduation was altered this year, it was still a beautiful send off for our seniors. Margaret Corns, this year’s valedictorian is a St.Simon graduate and plans on attending Purdue this fall. In Corns’ speech, she reminded all seniors not to focus on their past mistakes or missed opportunities, but to remember the good times they had at Chatard. Even though the seniors were met with some challenges along their high school experience, they finished strong.

Thomas Joven, this year’s salutatorian, is also a St.Simon graduate and plans on attending Wabash College. Joven’s speech captured the essence of Bishop Chatard; family. This speech was centered around Joven’s change from freshman through senior year, and the change in his outlook towards Chatard. Thomas even included a shout out for the senior exchange students who were not able to attend this commencement ceremony.

To commemorate the class of 2020’s high school experience, a group of seniors created a video to play at graduation, but sadly it was cut short. Graduate Natalie Donaldson said, “I think the video was cool, like seeing my highschool memories on a screen.”

As all the seniors at Bishop Chatard go their separate ways, we hope they will remember the great experiences and memories they made at Bishop Chatard High School.
