The BCHS theatre department will be presenting two new shows at the beginning of March.

This will include the New Play Festival March 2 and 4 and Black on Broadway scheduled March 3 and 5. The New Play Festival features original plays created by students. The plays that will be shown are With Half Shut Eyes, written by senior Erika Meckauskas; No Regrets, written by sophomore Erika Koepfer; Brothers, written by freshman Abby Harkness; The Lunch Committee, written by senior Grace Gore; and Gentlejacks, written by junior Eliza Foran.

The Black on Broadway event will be performed like a musical concert with informational narratives spread throughout. It will feature professional performers from around the city who are friends of Mr. Kyle Guyton, theatre arts director. Songs that they will be performing are taken from traditionally African American musicals including Memphis, The Lion King, Ragtime, Porgy and Bess.

“There are so many cool things happening with African Americans and Broadway which I think is making a positive impact all over the world. I would love to see some more diversity within the theatre department and I thought this would be a good way to introduce the idea to our students and community,” said Mr. Guyton on his inspiration to begin the Black on Broadway event.
