Meet the New Student Council

Audrey Donaldson, Staff Reporter

Student Council is a respected tradition at Bishop Chatard. Every year students from BCHS get to vote for their fellow students to be on the student council. Student council is a way to get students involved and represent the student body, so it is a very big responsibility to get elected. Student representatives have many jobs during the year, such as preparing the gym for dances like homecoming and MORP, running the canned food drive, running the talent show, and many other responsibilities.

For the upcoming school year, senior Mary Bea Sowinski was elected as class president. Sowinski is very excited to take on the role of class president. Sowinski said has been on student council all four years of her high school career. She said she is excited to be president because “I have loved seeing the impact that each president has had on the energy of the student body and school as a whole. I want to bring the energy of the school back after two crazy school years and encourage student participation in all areas.” Sowinski said that she has always known that she wanted to be on the student council, but she did not expect to win. “I’ve been thrilled each year to find out that I made it for the next year, and today’s news was no different,” Sowinski remarked.

Junior representative Kennedy Ganyor has been on student council for three years running. Gaynor enjoys being on student council because “it gives me the opportunity to represent my school and my grade.” Ganyor said, “Being on student council is just a fun and interesting experience and I think everyone should try to go out for it.” Gaynor said her favorite part of student council is picking the homecoming theme every year and decorating the halls for homecoming week. She said every year she is surprised she won because, “I never expect to win but when I have won it’s super exciting and makes me really happy knowing my grade wants me to represent them.”

One of the elected representatives for the sophomore grade is Colin Kirchgessner. Kirchgessner has experience in student council, as he was also elected during his grade school days at St.Matthew. He said, “I ran thinking I didn’t really have a shot at winning, but thought it’d be fun to try. Sure enough, I won that year and fell in love with everything STUCO is.” He first ran in seventh grade and now has been elected four times, twice in his grade school career and twice in his high school career. Kirchgessner is very excited about winning and said, “The service opportunities and community outreach programs that we can provide through student council is truly an amazing thing and makes being on STUCO super exciting.” He is excited to help lead the BCHS student body to greatness and represent his grade and school.
