Freshman wins award for conservation efforts

Freshman Matthais Benko recently won the Charles D. Wise Youth Conservation Award. According to, this award is given to someone under 18 who has exhibited “excellent conservation practices.”

By speaking at multiple events, even giving a 45 minute keynote in Ohio, Benko is more than qualified to receive this award. He has spoken about the importance of protecting nature and has built about 25 bird houses as one of his conservation projects. In addition to the recognition, Benko will get $200 to use towards a conservation project of his choosing.

Benko said, “I was shocked because it’s a pretty big deal to me and it’s nice to be recognized for the things I do. It made me feel good about myself.”
