Many students have hobbies outside of school; reading, technology, sports, art or writing. However, sophomore Matthias Benko has a pastime that not many teenagers take up- bird-watching.

“I got into bird watching five years ago during a family trip to Colorado. We were surrounded by all this cool wildlife, but I took special interest in the birds,” said Benko.

His interest developed over the years and it became his passion. Through his observation of birds and their habitats, Benko also became interested in conservation. This past week, Benko was named the 2016 Indiana Young Birder of the Year. Benko earned the accolade by being an active leader in the Indiana Young Birders Club.

Benko said, “I love the challenge of birding and observing the different birds themselves, as they’re all different.”
