Sponsored by National Catholic Educational Association, Catholic Schools Week is an annual celebration of Catholic education in the United States. Schools typically observe the week with activities for students, families, parishioners and community members. Through these events, schools focus on the value Catholic education provides to young people and its contributions to Church, local communities and the nation. This year’s theme is Catholic Schools: Learn. Serve. Lead. Succeed.

Here, Mr. Joe Hansen, principal and Deacon Rick Wagner, vice president of mission and ministry have set a schedule for next week:

Monday, Jan. 29 – Celebrating Your Community

The week starts with students honoring the Bishop Chatard community by allowing students to wear spirit wear, or gear from their home parish. Bishop Chatard spirit wear or North Deanery spirit wear is allowed with regular uniform bottoms.  Students will attend a faith formation opportunity from Deacon Rick Wagner during homeroom.

Tuesday, Jan. 30 – Celebrating Your Students

Today is all about current Trojans. Students are allowed a FREE dress down day, and will be given a special treat at lunch. Students may wear jeans or sweatpants on this day. Deacon Rick Wagner will lead a faith formation activity during homeroom.

Wednesday, Jan. 31 – Celebrating the Nation

Navy veteran Mr. Bob McClain will start the day by leading the school in prayer. As Mr. Hansen says each morning, “We live in the greatest country in the world.” Students will celebrate by dressing in patriotic colors!  Students may wear red, white, and blue with regular uniform bottoms.  Also, BCHS hosts the North Deanery Spell Bowl at 4:30 p.m.

Thursday, Feb. 1 -Celebrating Vocations

BCHS will have an all-school Mass. During Mass, there will be a time to honor the school’s pastor, deacon, and others dedicated to a church vocation. This is a regular uniform day.  Later this evening, the boys basketball team plays Roncalli High School at the Indiana Farmers Coliseum.  In honor of Catholic Schools Week, select teachers from both schools will be honored at halftime by Archdiocese of Indianapolis Superintendent Gina Kuntz-Fleming.  Make plans to pack the house at the Indiana Farmers Coliseum. The theme is “White Out” with a tip-off of 5:30 p.m.

Friday, Feb. 2 – Celebrating Faculty, Staff and Volunteers

Imitation is the best form of flattery, right?  Students may dress like their favorite teacher or support staff member. Teachers and support staff will be given a FREE casual day, and a lunch catered by the Trinity Club.  Select students will be invited to pay tribute to their teachers on morning announcements. And the fun event you’ve all been waiting for…..the student vs. faculty basketball game takes place in the afternoon! End the week by going to Brebeuf Jesuit High School as the girls basketball team competes in the sectional semi-final! Tip off at 6 p.m.
