BCHS band members recently participated in the Indiana State School Music Association (ISSMA) District Solo & Ensemble contest and were recognized for their performances. During this contest, music students across Indiana voluntarily worked to prepare solos, ensemble pieces or both to perform for a judge.

“It should be noted that students can get help from me if they choose, but the bulk of the work is done on their own,” said Mr. Dan Haag, band director.

The musicians were judged based on accurate notes and rhythms, adherence to style, and maintaining appropriate tempo and dynamics. They are then given an overall score based on this criteria and receive a gold rating, silver, bronze, or participation. Musicians who receive a Gold rating in the highest difficulty category can move on to the state level of competition.

Although no BCHS students were state qualifiers, all of them still placed. Erik Compton, sophomore, received a silver rating for his baritone saxophone solo. Jack Lockrem, junior, Robbie Tebbe, senior, and Compton received a gold rating for their saxophone trio. Zach Elcesser, sophomore, received a gold rating for is snare drum solo.

“I’m very proud of their efforts and their progress as musicians and young people,” said Mr. Haag about the BCHS musicians.
